These dark, dreary days of winter,
Press down upon my soul,
And leach the life from me,
Like a succubus in the night.
Once I was like a seed in the ground,
Waiting, germinating, hopeful.
But the cold, lifeless days have surrounded me.
And cloaked me with their siphoning darkness.
The light on my path is extinguished,
I realize now with maudlin clarity,
It was these dark, dreary days of winter,
That incubated my soul.

Certainly a good discription for the winter time blues. Very powerful well written poem.
So true, so true and so very well said.
Are you sure you aren't just talking about Charleston?
Dark, yes, but look at the brightness of the white snow.
This is a good poem, Matthre--conveys your mood very well. Sun is supposed to be here on Sunday! How appropriate.
So, I apologize that I don't know more about you. Came here by way of Granny Sue's blog. Poem well done. Working on a book? Are you a writer? Sorry I don't know more.

BayouWoman,
Thanks for stopping by and seeing us today. We enjoy your visits. to answer a few of your questions, No, I am not writing a book. My wife, Shirley Stewart Burns, is an author and she is working on a new book with Marilynn Evans (who done The Appalachians). I am a research & technical assistant for my wife, and it is proving to be quite a project.
I wouldn't necessarily consider myself a writer, but I like to write and tell stories on this blog. So far the reader feedback has been positive so I'll continue to write my stories as long as you all keep reading.
I'm a pretty open person, so if you want to know more about me, read back through the archived posts, also feel free to leave comments on any of them. I gauge the success of my posts with the number of comments I get. If folks like something, I typically write more stories in that vein, and likewise, if folks don't respond to some posts, then I know they probably don't care too much for them.
As always, feel free to ask any questions that you may have.
I found I have the most loyal readers out there, and I appreciate and value you all.
Thanks,
Matthew
This is well written, however it reminds my too much of what my depression feels like...not just in winter...
